Orchids - Crete

Wild orchids have intrigued me since the age of 10 when I discovered my first bee orchid and could not believe a flower could look like that. In 1983 my first book Wild Orchids of Britain & Europe was published and became regarded as a standard work. I first visited Crete in 1974 and, my first sight of the wild orchids was at Festos in a violent storm - but I did not care as I saw monkey orchids, Cretan ophrys and 23 other species drenched with rain. I knew then what I wanted to do and that the passion for nature and for photography could not be ignored - I later lived in both Cyprus and now in Italy and that early love of orchids has not abated. Crete will always, however, occupy a special place in my heart.
