Bugs: Macro insects

My entry into nature photography was driven by a love of the world in close-up. In 1998 I wrote my first book on this area of photography (The Complete Guide to Close-up and Macro Photography) that appeared in five langage editions and made me many friends and contacts and offered opportunities to travel and lecture internationally. Together with Clay Bolt I have set up the blog Learn Macro as a resource for all things 'macro' and much more besides.

I love what has become known as 'macro' because it fuses a love of nature, a passion for photography (especially the technical challenges) with a profound interest in art and the patterns in nature. Most of the images were taken with a Sigma 150mm f/2.8 macro lens with a Nikon R1C! macroflash so I can balance daylight and flash lighting for a more punchy but natural effect.
